Our theory is that this earlier photo shows the workshop from the side where Cannell's Blacksmith & Wheelwright ran the length of what is now the right hand shop and opened onto the lane way at the rear of PE Hall's Jubilee Cash Store. The land was purchased by Catherine Cannell (the wife of Charles Cannell) in 1913 but we don't yet know if the buildings were already there.

This later photo seems to show the same building from the front where it faces onto Charles Street. Catherine Cannell purchased the left hand strip of land from Mrs Rosina Hall in April 1921 and the motor repair shop was built on this left hand block. The vehicle is a Ford Model T, probably a 1913 D&F Tourer.

Sale ad from the Mercury in 1923. Charles Cannell passed away in November 2021. The property was listed for sale after the death of Catherine Cannell in December 1922. It eventually sold in 1924 - more details to follow...

By looking at aerial photos, we know that some time between 1947 and 1963 the galvanised metal and weatherboard workshop buildings were demolished and two brick shops were built on the site, not necessarily at the same time. The right hand shop appears to be earlier. Later the wall between the two shops was knocked out to make a single shop.

While doing renovations, the old signage for Lena Rice's store was revealed. We have two possible dates 10 years apart - Lena Rice's son Ian says this was revealed in 1985 - however the couple who ran the lolly shop and did the renovations say it was 1995. More research needed! Lena Rice moved to this location from 35 High Street in approximately 1954.
